Michael Owen sends blunt warning to Emre Can about Liverpool FC contract
The Liverpool FC legend warns Emre Can that he will struggle to secure a contract offer from a better club than the Reds
Michael Owen has warned Emre Can that he will struggle to find a better club than Liverpool if the German midfielder allows his contract to run out.
The 23-year-old has already entered the final 12 months of his current Liverpool deal to throw up the possibility of Can leaving for nothing next summer.
Indeed, the promising midfielder will be free to talk to potential suitors in January unless Liverpool can convince the German star to commit his future to the Anfield outfit.
Can has been linked with a potential move to Serie A champions Juventus, while a return to Germany could be on the cards given his previous spells with Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen.
The Liverpool no23 scored the Merseyside outfit’s second goal in a 3-0 victory over Slovenian side Maribor in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
However, ex-Reds striker Owen warned Can that he could struggle to find a bigger club to hand him a lucrative contract.
Owen told BT Sport: “Is he going to get better than Liverpool though?
“When you run your contract down, you normally leave for a bigger club.”
Can moved to Liverpool in an £8.75m deal from Bayer Leverkusen in the 2015 summer transfer window under Klopp’s predecessor Brendan Rodgers.
The rising German star has netted two goals in six appearances in the Champions League this term, while he has made two assists in eight Premier League games.
