Steven Gerrard names four reasons Emre Can should sign new Liverpool FC contract
The Liverpool FC legend wants Emre Can to commit to a new Reds contract
Steven Gerrard has told Emre Can to sign a new deal with Liverpool despite interest from a number of top European clubs.
The Germany international has entered the final 12 months of his current Liverpool deal to raise the possibility of Can leaving for nothing next summer.
Can has been linked with Serie A champions Juventus regularly over the past season or so as the Italian club look to strengthen their midfield following Paul Pogba’s return to Manchester United in 2016.
Premier League leaders Manchester City have been touted as possible suitors in recent weeks but Can moving to the Citizens would be a hammerblow to their title aspirations in the future.
The 23-year-old has blossomed into a powerful Premier League midfielder with plenty of room to still develop under German coach Jurgen Klopp at the Merseyside outfit.
Former Liverpool captain Gerrard has offered four reasons why Can should remain at Anfield and ignore the overtures from Juventus and Manchester City.
“If it was me in his shoes, I’d sign the deal,” Gerrard told BT Sport.
“He’s got a German manager who believes in him. He’s a regular in the team, he’s grown and Liverpool have helped him to improve.
“He’s getting in the national team and moving forward. He’s looking like a really good player.”
Liverpool signed Germany international Can in an £8.75m deal from Bayer Leverkusen in the 2014 summer transfer window.
The Reds are in fifth place in the Premier League table following a 4-1 win at West Ham United last weekend.
