The retired England international has managed to force his way into first-team contention over the past week or so.
Milner started his fourth Premier League game of the 2017-18 season last weekend as Liverpool eased to a 3-0 victory over Huddersfield Town at Anfield.
The Liverpool star retained his starting spot for the visit of Maribor after he helped the Reds secure a record 7-0 Champions League win in Slovenia last month.
Milner produced a delightful assist to tee up Emre Can for Liverpool’s second goal of the night after the ex-Leeds United midfielder has missed a second-half penalty.
The 31-year-old was used as a left-back throughout the 2016-17 season despite Milner’s traditional position as a midfielder or a winger.
Former Liverpool captain Hyypia talked up Milner’s qualities following the Englishman’s performance.
“Every manager wants players who you can put on the field and know what they’re going to give you,” Hyypia told BT Sport.
“He is consistent every week. James is a good example of that type of player.”
Liverpool signed Milner in a free transfer from title rivals Manchester City in the 2015 summer transfer window.
The Reds will make the trip to West Ham United in search of their fifth Premier League win of the 2017-18 season on Saturday afternoon.
Liverpool finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last term.
