The England striker came on in the 74th minute at Anfield during the European clash and scored in the 90th minute at Anfield after goals from Mohamed Salah and Emre Can had put Jurgen Klopp’s men in control.
It has been something of a mixed season for Sturridge so far this term, with the forward having only made four starts in the Premier League for Klopp’s men.
The 28-year-old striker has scored three goals and made two assists in all competitions for the Reds so far this season and netted his first Champions League goal of the new campaign on Wednesday night.
However, former Liverpool star Owen says he would like to see Sturridge make some more starts for the Merseyside outfit under Klopp this term.
Speaking on BT Sport on Wednesday night, Owen said: “I expected him to start [against Maribor].
“Klopp doesn’t change his team that much. But having scored in his last game, I thought this was his night.
“Considering the attacking players who are out, he must sit there wondering when is he going to get a nice little run. He is scoring plenty of goals. He should have started.”
Sturridge will be hoping to be involved for Liverpool when the Reds return to Premier League action on Saturday evening with a trip to east London to take on West Ham United.
The Reds are aiming to build on their 3-0 victory over Huddersfield town at Anfield last weekend.
