Michael Owen believes that Liverpool are still missing a proper holding midfield player under Jurgen Klopp.

The Reds have been in stuttering form so far this season and have struggled to produce consistent displays under the German coach.

Liverpool were 3-0 winners over Maribor on Wednesday night in the Champions League as they took another step towards qualification for the last 16 of Europe’s elite club competition.

Jordan Henderson has been tasked with playing the holding midfield role for the Reds in recent weeks.

However, former Liverpool striker Owen believes that the Merseyside outfit are still missing an out-and-out holding midfield player at Anfield.

Speaking to BT Sport on Wednesday night, Owen said: “There is no real out and out holding midfielder. I’ve spoken about it before.

“Jordan Henderson is probably the main person to do that. He is running everywhere. It’s a sacrificial job. It was Didi Hamann in our day. It’s a player who is happy to sit and be disciplined.”

Liverpool return to Premier League action on Saturday evening with a trip to east London to take on West Ham United at the Olympic Stadium.

The Reds are currently 12 points behind leaders Manchester City in the race for the Premier League title as they look to claw their way back into contention this season.

Liverpool finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last season as they secured Champions League qualification under Klopp, who was appointed as Brendan Rodgers’ successor back in October 2015.
