Steven Gerrard has told Rhian Brewster to be patient as he looks to break into the first team at Liverpool.

Brewster, who joined Liverpool aged 14, scored a hat-trick in the Under-17 World Cup semi-final win against Brazil also netted in the final as England came from 2-0 down to beat Spain 5-2.

The 17-year-old was also the top scorer in the Under-17 World Cup tournament with eight goals to his name.

Gerrard is currently in charge of the Liverpool Under-18 squad and the former Reds captain has told Brewster to stay humble and hungry as he looks to break into the first team at Anfield.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Gerrard said: “The message for Rhian is: ‘Well done. You’ve been superb and deserve all the plaudits you get. How do you improve now?’.

“We want Rhian Brewster in a successful Liverpool team. We want him firing for the under-23s and, basically, making sure Jurgen [Klopp] is taking notice of his performances – that’s all he can do.

“I think if he’s got any dreams and aspirations of playing higher than that level then he needs to play at a consistent level and score goals heavily. That’s how first-team managers take note.”

Brewster is now scheduled to return to Liverpool and work with the Under-23 squad at the Merseyside outfit’s Academy.

Meanwhile, Liverpool’s first team are currently preparing for their crunch Premier League showdown with West Ham United at the Olympic Stadium on Saturday evening.

Liverpool were 3-0 winners over Maribor in the Champions League in midweek and also beat Huddersfield Town 3-0 in the Premier League at Anfield last weekend.

The Merseyside outfit have been in stuttering form in the Premier League this season, however, and they already trail leaders Manchester City by 12 points after just 10 games.
