Liverpool FC have unlikely ‘out and out goalscorer’, claims ex-defender
The Liverpool legend heaps praise on summer signing Mohamed Salah
Liverpool finally have an out and out goalscorer in Mohamed Salah, according to ex-defender Gary Gillespie.
The Merseyside outfit signed Salah in a £39m deal from Serie A giants AS Roma in the summer transfer window.
The Reds made Salah their most-expensive signing before later agreeing deals for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita.
Salah struggled during his previous spell with Chelsea before he moved to Serie A on loan at Fiorentina and AS Roma.
However, the 25-year-old has made a brisk start to his Liverpool career following a return of seven goals in 10 Premier League appearances.
Salah has also netted five goals in six Champions League fixtures to help the Reds secure top spot in their group with two games to play.
Liverpool have had an out-and-out goal-scorer since Luis Suarez with Daniel Sturridge struggling with a series of injuries.
Former Liverpool defender Gillespie believes Salah has proven a surprise package for the 18-time English champions.
“Since the start of the season he has been absolutely sensational for Liverpool,” Gillespie told Liverpool’s website.
“He’s got the one thing people hate, and that is pace in abundance [and] I’ve never actually seen him get knocked to the floor or fall over.
“He’s got 12 goals but he could easily have had 20 because he gets in goalscoring positions on numerous occasions and not quite finishes it.
“We’ve all been screaming for an out-and-out goalscorer. It comes in an unlikely figure in Mo Salah.
“I didn’t think at the start of the season he would be a 20-goal-a-season man but if he continues the way he is going he could easily get to 20 or 25.
“There is always one player in the squad the fans idolise and the way Salah has started he could be the one.”
Liverpool finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last season to secure a return to the Champions League after a two-season absence.
The Reds signed four players in the summer transfer window and agreed a deal for Naby Keita.
