Steven Gerrard predicts whether 23-year-old will start next season at Liverpool FC
Steven Gerrard makes a prediction about Emre Can's future at Liverpool FC, with his contract situation still unclear
Steven Gerrard says that it’s “50/50” whether Emre Can will remain and sign a new contract with Liverpool FC.
The 23-year-old’s future has been a source of speculation in recent months after he entered into the final year of his contract at Anfield.
Liverpool are believed to have opened talks with Can about a new contract more than a year ago but the two parties are yet to come to an agreement about a new deal.
Can is inevitably being linked with a move away from Liverpool as his contract ticks down, with the German free to speak to foreign clubs about a potential move in January.
And Gerrard admits that he is not sure whether Can will still be a Liverpool player this time next year or not.
Asked whether he expects Can to sign a new deal at Liverpool, Gerrard told BT Sport on Saturday: “I think it’s 50/50. I think Jurgen Klopp could be a big factor in it, hopefully.
“They rate him and the fans like him but he may have the dream of playing for Bayern Munich. If that’s the case, you move on.”
Gerrard added: “Naby Keita is not a bad replacement.”
Can produced a solid display for Liverpool as the Reds secured a 4-1 victory over West Ham United at the London Stadium on Saturday night.
The Reds will return to Premier League action after the international break when they take on Southampton at Anfield as they look to close the gap to leaders Manchester City, who they currently trail by 12 points.
