Steven Gerrard believes that Liverpool FC will challenge for the Premier League title this season despite their stuttering start to the new campaign.

The Reds boosted their top-four hopes on Saturday when they secured a comprehensive 4-1 victory over West Ham United at the Olympic Stadium.

Liverpool have struggled to find consistent form in the Premier League under Jurgen Klopp this season and they have only won five of their opening 11 top flight games.

Klopp will be hoping to see his side mount a serious Premier League title challenge this season after the Reds ended up fourth in the table last term.

Gerrard feels that Liverpool are not far away from the best teams in the Premier League but says it will be crucial for the Merseyside outfit to begin to show some consistency as the hectic festive period looms large.

Speaking to BT Sport on Saturday night, Gerrard said: “They’re certainly up there with the top players in the Premier League.

“The thing with Liverpool is that they’ve got to get that balance right and find a little bit more consistency.

“If they get the defensive base right, they’re always going to cause problems and score heavily.

“But the key to it is – can they defend better and find more consistency as a defensive unit?”

Liverpool return to Premier League action after the international break with a home clash against Southampton on Saturday 18 November.

The Reds will be aiming to climb their way up the Premier League table in the coming weeks as they also look to book their place in the last 16 of the Champions League.
