Steven Gerrard heaped praise on Emre Can and Georginio Wijnaldum for their solid performances as Liverpool notched up an impressive 4-1 victory over West Ham United in the Premier League on Saturday night.

Jurgen Klopp’s side ran riot at the London Stadium as the Reds secured a convincing performance agains the sorry Hammers in east London.

Mohamed Salah opened the scoring in the first half when he slotted home after being found by Sadio Mane.

Liverpool were soon 2-0 up when Joel Matic finished from close range from a corner.

Manuel Lanzini pulled a goal back for West Ham in the second half, but Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain netted to make it 3-1.

And man of the match Salah then added further gloss to the scoreline when he added a fourth for the visitors late on.

Speaking on BT Sport after the final whistle, Gerrard voiced his approval for Liverpool’s overall display as well as the performances of Can and Wijnaldum.

“I think you’ve got to give credit to the manager,” Gerrard said.

“His formation today surprised everyone with a 4-4-2 but what it did was give Liverpool a solid base.

“I thought Emre Can and Georginio Wijnaldum were superb in protecting the back four.

“It gave licence to Mo Salah, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino to go and cause West Ham a lot of problems.

“And that’s what they did, with the power and the pace and how direct they are.”

Liverpool’s win left them in sixth place in the Premier League table.

The Reds return to Premier League action after the international break with a home clash against Southampton on Saturday 18 November at Anfield.
