John Aldridge states his prediction for Liverpool FC v Southampton
The Liverpool FC legend warns Southampton will be tricky opponents at Anfield on Saturday afternoon
John Aldridge has warned Liverpool that Jurgen Klopp’s men will find it difficult to break down Southampton at Anfield on Saturday evening.
The Reds have won their last three games in all competitions following victories over Huddersfield Town, Maribor and West Ham United.
Liverpool are in fifth place in the Premier League table and four points behind Chelsea in the final Champions League qualification spot.
The Merseyside outfit have dropped points at home to Burnley and Manchester United after both teams adopted a negative approach at Anfield.
Southampton have scored nine goals in 11 games in the Premier League, but the Saints have only conceded 11 times – six goals fewer than Liverpool.
Former Liverpool striker Aldridge admitted that the 18-time English champions could struggle against a defensive Southampton team at Anfield.
“They struggle to score goals but they’re doing well defensively and keep it tight. Sound familiar?” Aldridge told Liverpool Echo.
“Sadly, yes. They’ll come here and do what Burnley, Huddersfield and Maribor did, without a shadow of a doubt.
“Five at the back, four in midfield, one up front, focusing on set plays all day long; we just have to watch out for Nathan Redmond and Manolo Gabbiadini, two players who I do like.”
Liverpool are 12 points behind current leaders Manchester City following a disappointing start to the Premier League campaign.
The Reds finished in fourth place in the table last term to secure a return to the Champions League for the first time since 2014.
The 18-time English champions signed AS Roma winger Mohamed Salah, Chelsea teenager Dominic Solanke, Hull City defender Andy Robertson and Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
