Paul Merson states his prediction for Liverpool FC v Southampton
The Arsenal legend is tipping Liverpool FC to ease to a 1-0 win against Southampton in the Premier League this weekend
Paul Merson is backing Liverpool FC to edge to narrow 1-0 win against Southampton at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.
The Merseyside outfit will be hoping to record a fourth successive win in all competitions to continue their recent turnaround.
Liverpool have beaten Huddersfield Town, Maribor and West Ham United to silence their critics with 10 goals and two clean sheets.
The Reds are in fifth place in the Premier League table and four points behind defending champions Chelsea, who occupy the final Champions League spot.
Jurgen Klopp’s side will face a Southampton side that has only scored 11 times in 11 games in the Premier League under new manager Mauricio Pellegrino.
However, Liverpool failed to score a goal in four meetings with Southampton in the Premier League and the League Cup last term.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson believes Liverpool manage to secure a close-fought win against the Saints at Anfield this weekend.
“Southampton will just sit back and defend,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“Southampton beat them over two legs last year [in the League Cup semi-finals[ and done well in the second leg at Anfield when [Shane] Long scored.
“But I am going to go for Liverpool, Southampton will sit back – if Liverpool score early, it could be more, but I think they find it very difficult to break teams down.”
Liverpool finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last term to secure a return to the Champions League.
The Reds haven’t won the Premier League title but finished in second place in 2002, 2009 and 2014.
The Merseyside outfit attempted to sign Southampton captain Virgil van Dijk in the summer.
