Sami Hyypia insists Liverpool midfielder Emre Can has the ability to become a top player.

The German midfielder has made a decent start to the season following a return of two assists in eight appearances in the Premier League this season.

The versatile midfielder has scored two goals in six Champions League games to help Liverpool reach the group stage and secure top spot in Group E.

Indeed, Can netted Liverpool’s second goal in a 3-0 victory over Slovenian side Maribor in their European clash at Anfield on Wednesday night.

The German star moved to Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in an £8m deal under Jurgen Klopp’s predecessor Brendan Rodgers in 2015.

Can worked under Hyypia during the former Liverpool captain’s brief stint in charge of the Bundesliga outfit.

And the retired Finnish defender revealed that he is a big fan of Can since managing the 23-year-old during his Leverkusen spell.

“I hope he will stay. He will develop still,” Hyypia told BT Sport.

“I had him as a younger player in Germany. He was showing signs he can develop into a great player one day.”

Liverpool finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last season to secure a return to the Champions League.
