Sami Hyypia believes Liverpool need to add a leader to their defence to help solve their problems at the back.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have made a tricky start to the 2017-18 season despite signing four players in the summer transfer window following their fourth-place finish last term.

The Liverpool manager failed to add a central defender to his Reds squad despite Dejan Lovren, Ragnar Klavan and Joel Matip all struggling with fitness and form issues.

The Merseyside outfit went all out to sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton but the Saints refused to sell the Netherlands international despite the ex-Celtic man handing in a transfer request

Liverpool have conceded 15 goals in five games on the road in the Premier League ahead of Saturday’s trip to West Ham United.

One of Liverpool’s most consistent centre-halves of the Premier League era was Hyypia, who played alongside Stephane Henchoz before teaming up with Jamie Carragher.

The former Liverpool skipper believes that Klopp is lacking leaders in defence following their poor defensive record this term.

“There are not enough leaders in the field. Someone needs to take charge,” Hyypia told BT Sport.

“Communication is everyone’s responsibility but you can help your team-mate and do it together.”

Liverpool managed to keep back-to-back clean sheets in successive 3-0 victories over Huddersfield Town and then Maribor.
