John Aldridge tells Liverpool FC fans to play a part in Virgil van Dijk transfer
The Liverpool FC legend wants the club's fans to give Virgil van Dijk a warm welcome at Anfield this weekend
John Aldridge believes the Liverpool supporters can prove to Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk that he is wanted at Anfield.
The Netherlands international was linked with a move to the 18-time English champions in the summer transfer window but Liverpool were unable to get a deal over the line.
Indeed, the Reds were forced to issue an apology to Southampton for their pursuit of the 26-year-old defender after the Saints threatened to report Liverpool for an alleged illegal tapping up.
Van Dijk even handed in a transfer request but the south coast club refused to alter their stance on the Dutch centre-half despite his desire to leave St Mary’s.
Liverpool have conceded 17 times in 11 games in the Premier League this season to raise serious concerns about their defensive problems.
Former Reds striker Aldridge urged the Liverpool supporters to give Van Dijk a warm welcome at Anfield on Saturday afternoon to prove to the Dutch centre-half that he is wanted at the Merseyside club.
“I don’t think we’ll get that on Saturday with van Dijk but I hope he gets a good reception,” Aldridge told Liverpool Echo.
“It can help a player when they know they’re wanted somewhere. We all want to see him at Anfield on a full-time basis, because he fits the criteria of what we need.”
Liverpool are in fifth place in the Premier League table following a 4-1 victory over West Ham United at the London Stadium last time out.
The Reds have won their last three games in all competitions.
