The Reds were heavily linked with a move to land Southampton centre-half Virgil van Dijk in the summer months but a move for the Netherlands star eventually failed to materialise after Liverpool were accused of an alleged illegal approach by the Saints.
Jurgen Klopp opted not to pursue other central defensive targets in the summer and instead chose to persevere with his current options at Anfield.
Liverpool, though, have struggled in defence this season and have already conceded 21 times in the Premier League this term.
Their defensive woes are likely to spark plenty of speculation linking Liverpool with transfer moves for players in that department as the January window draws ever nearer.
And former Liverpool star Owen believes that it’s crucial for the Reds to bring in defensive reinforcements in the summer transfer window.
Speaking to Omnisport, Owen said: “In defence, they have conceded far too many goals and now there is a bit of a gap from the top, from Manchester City to Liverpool.
“Jurgen Klopp will definitely try to strengthen in the winter with defensive players because in attack Liverpool are very exciting.”
Liverpool were 4-1 winners over West Ham United before the international break, and the Reds return to Premier League action on Saturday 18 November when they host Southampton at Anfield.
Klopp’s side are currently fifth in the Premier League table and 12 points behind leaders Manchester City after 11 games of the new campaign.
