Sadio Mane reveals how he helped Liverpool FC sign Naby Keita
The Liverpool FC forward sheds light on his role in convincing Naby Keita to agree to a move to Anfield
Sadio Mane has revealed what advice he offered Naby Keita when the RB Leipzig midfielder asked the forward about a potential move to Liverpool.
The Reds were heavily linked with a move to sign the Guinea international throughout the summer transfer window but RB Leipzig refused to entertain the prospect of losing Keita ahead of their first season in the Champions League.
Having seen a number of club-record bids rejected for the 24-year-old midfielder, Liverpool managed to reach a £48m agreement to sign Keita at the end of the 2017-18 season when his contract release clause kicks in.
The versatile midfielder will be the third African player in the Liverpool sqaud with Senegal international Mane becoming one of the most important members of Jurgen Klopp’s team alongside Cameroon defender Joel Matip.
Like Keita, Mane started his career in Europe with Swiss outfit Red Bull Salzburg before he moved to Southampton in the 2014 summer transfer window.
And the Liverpool forward revealed how he stayed in touch with Keita and convinced the RB Leipzig man that a move to Anfield would be a good decision.
“He is a really special player and is like family to me,” Mane told Goal.
“We were close at Salzburg and still keep in touch. I enjoy watching him and look forward to helping him again when he comes next year.
“He asked me about Liverpool and I told him this is an amazing club with talented players, a great manager and lots of ambition.
“The city and the people are really nice and he will feel at home here.”
Mane scored 13 goals and made five assists in 31 appearances in all competitions last term.
