Paul Merson: Why Henrikh Mkhitaryan will leave Man United in January
Paul Merson is expecting to see Henrikh Mkhitaryan leave Man United next year
Paul Merson believes that Henrikh Mkhitaryan is likely to leave Manchester United in the January transfer window.
The Armenia international has fallen out of favour at Old Trafford in recent weeks after struggling to produce consistent form for the Red Devils.
Indeed, Mkhitaryan was dropped by Jose Mourinho for the recent games against Basel and Newcastle United, when he wasn’t even included in the matchday squad.
The playmaker did make his return to action for the Red Devils when he came on as a second-half substitute during the 1-0 Premier League victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday.
However, Mourinho publicly criticised the playmaker for his recent dip in form in the build-up to Saturday’s game.
And former Arsenal star Merson believes that Mkhitaryan’s days at Manchester United are now numbered.
Speaking to Sky Sports News on Saturday, Merson said: “I think he was a better player at the beginning of the season when Pogba was in the team.
“I think they gelled quite well together. He’s a bit unlucky, I’m a big fan of his.
“But after that quote I’ll be shocked if he’s there in January.”
Manchester United’s win over Brighton moved them to within five points of Manchester City ahead of the Citizens’ trip to Huddersfield on Sunday.
The Red Devils will return to Premier League action with a trip to Vicarage Road to take on Watford on Tuesday night.
Manchester United will host Manchester City at Old Trafford on 10 December in what looks to be a crucial title-race showdown.
