Juan Mata sends warning to Man United ahead of Newcastle clash
The Manchester United midfielder warns his team-mates that Newcastle United are still a "big club"
Juan Mata has warned his Manchester United team-mates not to underestimate Newcastle United ahead of Saturday’s clash at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils will be looking to make a swift return to winning ways following a 1-0 loss to defending Premier League champions Chelsea last time out.
Mata was excluded from Jose Mourinho’s match day squad for the trip to Stamford Bridge as the Red Devils succumbed to their second defeat in three Premier League games.
Newcastle have made a solid start to their first season back in the Premier League but the Magpies lost 1-0 to fellow promoted side Brighton at St James’ Park before the international break.
Mata worked with Rafael Benitez during his brief stint in charge at Stamford Bridge and the pair won the Europa League thanks to a 2-1 victory over Portuguese outfit Benfica.
The Manchester United star talked up Newcastle ahead of their crucial Premier League game at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.
“Returning now to our game against Newcastle on Saturday, everyone knows they are newly-promoted but they are still a big club with several Spanish players.” Mata wrote on his personal blog.
“Among them Rafa Benitez, a manager with whom I was lucky to work with in the past. It will be nice to see him again. We hope to play a good game that allows us to get all three points, and continue showing that strength in Old Trafford.”
Manchester United are looking to win their first Premier League title since 2013 when Sir Alex Ferguson steered the Red Devils to their 13th top-flight crown under his management.
The Red Devils are in second place in the Premier League table but eight points adrift of current leaders Manchester City.
