After a goalless first half at Old Trafford, the Red Devils took the lead when Ashley Young’s shot from outside the box was deflected in off Lewis Dunk and into the back of the net in the 66th minute.
It was far from a comfortable scoreline for Jose Mourinho’s men, but the Red Devils managed to stretch their unbeaten run at Old Trafford in the league and cup to 39 games.
The win also allowed Mourinho’s men to close the gap to Manchester City at the top of the table down to five points, with the Premier League leaders in action against Huddersfield Town on Sunday.
And England legend Lineker was poised to report on proceedings for Manchester United fans after Young’s fortunate effort gave the home side the lead.
Lineker wrote on Twitter: “A flukey deflection after a Young shot following a disputed corner gives @ManUtd the lead. Things are livening up, thankfully.
Manchester United will now turn their attentions towards preparing for their Premier League clash against Watford at Vicarage Road on Tuesday night.
The Red Devils will be hoping to slice the gap to Manchester City down further when they take on the Citizens at Old Trafford on 10 December.
