Man United told summer signing is key to beating Chelsea
Phil Neville believes that Romelu Lukaku is the key to Manchester United beating Chelsea on Sunday
Romelu Lukaku will have to be in top form for Manchester United if the Red Devils want to beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on Sunday.
The Belgian striker drew another blank as he played the full 90 minutes in Manchester United’s 2-0 victory over Benfica in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
Lukaku has made a strong start to life at Old Trafford but he has failed to score for Jose Mourinho’s men in his last six outings for the Red Devils.
The forward signed for the Red Devils from Everton back in July as Mourinho moved quickly to bolster his attacking options at Old Trafford.
Lukaku will be expecting to start up front for the Red Devils when Manchester United take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.
Speaking to BBC Radio 5 live on Tuesday night, Neville said: “I think Romelu Lukaku probably dipped in the previous three games, which happens when you join a new side, but he was better against Tottenham and started bullying their defenders.
“Forget the chances he’s missed, if he keeps performing like that he will score goals in the big games and he looked razor-sharp. There’s not actually that many strikers who score lots of goals in the big games so I think it is a harsh criticism.
“If United are to get a result at Chelsea they need another big performance from him.”
Manchester United head into the game on the back of their 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League at Old Trafford last weekend.
Chelsea, meanwhile, were 1-0 winners over Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge last weekend.
The Blues won the Premier League in Antonio Conte’s first season at the club last season but they did not have the distraction of European football.
