Rio Ferdinand praised Paul Pogba for his fine performance after Manchester United’s 4-1 win over Newcastle kept them in the hunt for the Premier League title.

Pogba made his return to the starting line-up on Saturday evening and he did not disappoint as he impressed on his comeback.

It was Newcastle who took the lead through Dwight Gayle in the 14th minute, but the Red Devils drew level when Pogba found Anthony Martial with a fine cross and the French striker headed home.

The Red Devils then went ahead on the stroke of half-time when Chris Smalling headed in Ashley Young’s cross.

Pogba then found the net in the second half when he finished from close range, before Romelu Lukaku added gloss to the scoreline with a cool finish late on.

Ferdinand was watching the game at Old Trafford and was particularly impressed with Pogba’s play in the lead-up to Manchester United’s equaliser.

Speaking during BT Sport‘s coverage of the game, Ferdinand said: “He’s teasing the defenders [in the lead-up to Martial’s goal].

“That’s what you come to watch. It’s just a tantalising ball for Martial to attack. He then showed the desire to score the goal.”

The win left Manchester United in second place in the Premier League table and eight points behind leaders Manchester City after 12 games of the season.

The Red Devils travel to Switzerland to take on Basel on Wednesday night.
