Mourinho makes honest admission about Mkhitaryan at Man United
Jose Mourinho explains why he's recently opted to drop Henrikh Mkhitaryan from the Manchester United squad
Jose Mourinho has admitted that he feels he had no choice but to drop Henrikh Mkhitaryan from the Manchester United team because he was “disappearing” on the pitch for the Red Devils.
The Armenia international had made something of a strong start to the new campaign and notched up five assists in his first five Premier League appearances this term.
However, the playmaker’s form soon tapered off and Mkhitaryan struggled to produce consistent performances in the absence of the injured Paul Pogba.
Mourinho dropped Mkhitaryan from the Manchester United squad for the games against Newcastle United and Basel.
And the Portuguese coach has lifted the lid on his thinking behind that decision following the midfielder’s stuttering form in recent weeks.
Speaking at his pre-match news conference ahead of Manchester United’s trip to Brighton on Saturday, Mourinho said: “I was not happy with his last performances and I am not speaking about one or two.
“I am speaking about three, four or five. He started the season very well and, after that, step by step, he was disappearing.
“His performance levels in terms of goal scoring, assists, high pressing, recovering the ball high on the pitch, bringing the team with him as a number 10, were decreasing step by step.
“That was enough because the others, they work to have a chance, everybody works to have a chance. So, it is as simple as that.”
Manchester United are aiming to challenge for the Premier League title this season after having finished sixth in the table last season.
The Red Devils did win the Europa League and League Cup in Mourinho’s first campaign in charge at the club last term as they secured Champions League qualification.
Manchester United take on Watford in the Premier League on Tuesday night.
