Jose Mourinho claimed it was an “even” game after watching his Manchester United team slump to a 1-0 loss to Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday evening.

The Red Devils headed into the game fresh from their Champions League victory over Benfica in midweek and with Chelsea having lost 3-0 to Roma.

After a goalless but entertaining first half, it was Alvaro Morata who broke the deadlock in the 55th minute.

The Spanish striker rose highest to head home Cesar Azpilicueta’s fine cross to find the net and leave David De Gea rooted to the spot.

Manchester United had chances late on to score an equaliser but the goal didn’t come as Mourinho’s men had to swallow their second Premier League defeat of the season.

Mourinho admitted that he was frustrated by the goal conceded by his side and rued Manchester United’s inability to find an equaliser.

“It was an even match,” Mourinho told BBC Sport. “Both teams could win. The first to score would be in more defensive control and to win the match.

“The first half was really even. In the second half in the only period where they were on top of the game, they scored.

“It frustrates us to concede a goal in this situation. We lost ourselves after the goal emotionally. We found again the balance and desire in the last 15 to 20 minutes. It was all us. We had big chances to equalise but we couldn’t.”

Manchester United’s loss left the Red Devils second in the Premier League and eight points behind leaders Manchester City after 11 games.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are fourth and now just a point behind Mourinho’s men heading into the international break.
