Alvaro Morata sends message to Man United fans about Jose Mourinho
The Chelsea striker pays tribute to Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho
Alvaro Morata has spoken of his gratitude to Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho for handing the striker his debut at Real Madrid.
The Portuguese coach was responsible for ushering the promising centre-forward into the Real Madrid senior squad during his spell in charge at The Bernabeu.
Mourinho was linked with a move to sign Morata in a big-money deal in the summer transfer window but Manchester United ultimately decided to sign Romelu Lukaku.
Indeed, the Red Devils signed Lukaku in a £75m deal despite interest from the defending Premier League champions Chelsea.
The Blues ended up signing Morata in a £58m transfer deal with Real Madrid as the Spain international became the west London club’s most-expensive signing of all-time.
The 24-year-old has already scored seven goals in 10 games in the Premier League to match Lukaku’s goal tally at Manchester United.
Morata netted a 55th-minute winner in Chelsea’s 1-0 victory over title rivals Manchester United at Stamford Bridge last weekend.
Speaking to Marca about Mourinho’s influence on his career, Morata said:
“I saw him before the game and we gave each other a hug. It’s football. Nothing else.
“I will always be grateful to him because he is the coach who gave me my debut in the Primera.”
Morata was one of six new signings at Chelsea in the summer transfer window.
The title holders are nine points behind current leaders Manchester City after 11 games.
