Gary Neville explains Jose Mourinho’s reaction to Man United’s 1-0 win over Tottenham
The Man United legend attempts to explain the significance behind Jose Mourinho's post-match celebration
Gary Neville believes Jose Mourinho’s shush after Manchester United’s 1-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday was the Red Devils boss reiterating that he is going to do things his own way at Old Trafford.
The Manchester United manager helped the 20-time English champions to secure three valuable points at Old Trafford after Mourinho introduced Anthony Martial from the bench in the 70th minute.
The France international managed to get on the end of Romelu Lukaku’s knockdown before Martial finished past compatriot Hugo Lloris to secure three points for Mourinho’s men.
Manchester United are five points behind current leaders Manchester City despite ending a two-game winless run following a goalless stalemate with Liverpool and a 2-1 loss to promoted side Huddersfield Town.
Mourinho has been criticised for his negative tactics over the past month or so despite Manchester United collecting a respectable 23 points from their opening 10 games in the Premier League.
The Manchester United boss was caught on camera shushing his critics following the final whistle at Old Trafford last weekend.
Retired England defender Neville claimed that Mourinho’s post-match reaction was a clear sign to his detractors that he is prepared to do things his won way at Old Trafford.
“I think [the reaction] is one of a man who feels he has been unfairly criticised within the last couple of weeks,” Neville told Monday Night Football on Sky Sports.
“That was him saying: ‘I told you so, keep your mouth shut, do one everybody, I know what I’m doing, I’m in control, I’m a winner.’
“I have to say he’s changed a lot since that City game, I think he’s recognised he’s going to win his way, he doesn’t care what people say, and that shush was: ‘Be quiet, I’m going to do it my way, I’m going to win my way.'”
