Gary Neville sends direct message to Jose Mourinho about Man United target
The Man United legend challenges the Red Devils to win the Premier League title under Jose Mourinho
Gary Neville has reiterated his belief that Jose Mourinho has to win the Premier League title at Manchester United.
The Red Devils appointed Mourinho as Louis van Gaal’s successor in May 2016 after Manchester United finished in fifth place in the 2015-16 Premier League campaign.
The 20-time English champions regressed in terms of their league position under Mourinho following a sixth-place finish last term but Manchester United won the League Cup and the Europa League.
The Portuguese coach has signed six players since taking over the reins at Old Trafford to improve his squad with expensive additions such as Romelu Lukaku and Paul Pogba.
Manchester United are in second place in the Premier League table but five points behind leaders Manchester City after a return of four points from their last three games.
Former Red Devils defender Neville believes Mourinho is under pressure to end the club’s four-season wait to win the Premier League title.
“My personal view is he has come in to win the league. He’s got to win the league. The club hasn’t won the league for a few years,” Neville told Monday Night Football on Sky Sports.
“I have to say they’ve scored 15 goals in five games at Old Trafford, and the games I’ve been to have been exciting, they’ve played well.
“Saturday was a really good performance; I actually thought it was a good game, a bit of a struggle, as big games should be.”
Manchester United haven’t won the Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson won his final top-flight crown at Old Trafford in 2013.
The Red Devils will make the trip to defending Premier League champions Chelsea in their next top-flight clash at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.
