Charlie Nicholas believes Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is still a superior manager to Mauricio Pochettino.

The Red Devils appointed Mourinho as Louis van Gaal’s successor despite being linked with a move to bring in Tottenham head coach Pochettino.

Mourinho led the 20-time English champions to a sixth-place finish in the Premier League table last term.

However, Manchester United won the Europa League and the League Cup in their first campaign under Mourinho.

The Red Devils are currently in second place in the table and ahead of Tottenham on goal difference.

Spurs have finished in third place and second place in their last two seasons under Pochettino to make good progress.

However, the retired Argentina international is still waiting to get his hands on some silverware for the first time as Spurs boss.

Former Arsenal midfielder Nicholas believes Mourinho’s record of winning trophies still makes the Portuguese coach a better manager than Pochettino.

“[He is better] only by being the serial winner and the trophies he has gained,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.

Pochettino took over the reins at Tim Sherwood at White Hart Lane in 2014 following an impressive spell at Southampton.

The Red Devils haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013 when Sir Alex Ferguson lifted his 13th top flight crown.
