Rio Ferdinand believes Jose Mourinho is upset with Manchester United’s critics given their decent position in the Champions League and the Premier League.

The Red Devils won six of their opening seven Premier League games thanks to an impressive return of 21 goals and six clean sheets to keep pace with leaders Manchester City.

However, Manchester United dropped points in a goalless draw with bitter rivals Liverpool at Anfield before the Red Devils lost 2-1 at promoted side Huddersfield Town.

The 20-time English champions bounced back with a 1-0 win against title rivals Tottenham Hotspur last weekend before a close-fought 2-0 victory over Portuguese club Benfica.

Manchester United have attracted criticism for their dull style of play in recent weeks despite registering victories over Spurs and Benfica to get their season back on track.

Mourinho hit out at his team’s critics given Manchester United are in second place in the Premier League and have won all four of their Champions League games so far.

Former Manchester United defender Ferdinand reminded Mourinho that David Moyes and Louis van Gaal were heavily criticised for their unexciting brand of football.

“It was efficient. What he is upset about is he is getting results and doing what is asked of him in the Champions League,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.

“He is second in the Premier League. He is where he wouldn’t have minded being at this stage of the season. There is an expectancy at Manchester United in the way you go about it.

“In the last few years, the past managers have been hammered for the way they play. He is roundabout where he wants to be. He is ready to strike.”

Manchester United will make the trip to Mourinho’s former club Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday evening.
