Gary Neville: What impresses me about Man United defence under Jose Mourinho

Gary Neville has praised Jose Mourinho for building a “resilient” Manchester United defence.

The Red Devils have the best defensive record in the Premier League after 10 games.

Manchester United have only conceded four goals in their 10 outings so far, while David De Gea has kept eight clean sheets.

Mourinho was criticised for his conservative approach to Manchester United’s goalless draw with Liverpool at Anfield earlier this month.

The Red Devils produced another cagey performance in a 1-0 victory over title rivals Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford last weekend.

Mourinho has settled with a centre-half pairing of Eric Bailly and Phil Jones throughout most of the 2017-18 season so far.

Manchester United’s rivals Arsenal, Chelsea and particularly Liverpool have all had defensive issues this term.

Former England defender Neville believes Mourinho should be praised for building a formidable Manchester United defence.

“We tear strips out of defences constantly when they make mistakes – the Liverpool performance at Spurs recently we said was ridiculous – but actually this is really good defending to get this group of players, top players, to get back goal side, get into good defensive shape,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“It’s a resilience, a toughness that United have now got. They’re hard to beat, you very rarely see them exposed. That’s a robustness, a spirit.”

Neville added: “It’s not easy to get a group of players to do that for you, and Jose Mourinho has players who will run through brick walls for him. They have to do it his way, and then they’re off on the counter-attack.”

Manchester United are in second place in the Premier League table but five points adrift of current leaders Manchester City.

The Red Devils signed Bailly in a £30m deal from Spanish side Villarreal in the summer transfer window.

The 20-time English champions spent another £30m on Benfica defender Victor Lindelof back in June.

Manchester United haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013.
