Pat Nevin has claimed that Jose Mourinho doesn’t know how to utilise Manchester United duo Juan Mata and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The Red Devils boss omitted Mata from his Manchester United squad for their clash against defending Premier League champions Chelsea last weekend.

Mkhitaryan, meanwhile, struggle to make an impression on the Premier League clash and made way for Anthony Martial in the second half at Stamford Bridge.

Mourinho has been criticised for his negative approach to Manchester United’s games against Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea in recent weeks.

Mata was voted Chelsea’s player of the season in back-to-back seasons before his move to Manchester United in 2013.

Armenia international Mkhitaryan moved to Manchester United last summer after finishing as the Bundesliga’s top assist-maker in 2015-16.

Former Chelsea winger Nevin believes Mourinho doesn’t know how to get the best out of number 10s such as Mata and Mkhitaryan.

“Jose doesn’t really know what to do with a Mata or a Mkhitaryan,” Nevin told Newstalk.

“He doesn’t understand it. His methodology, for whatever we say, it wins trophies. If Man United win a trophy this year, you won’t be surprised.”

Manchester United are in second place in the Premier League table and eight points adrift of leaders Chelsea.

The Red Devils will welcome Newcastle United to Old Trafford in their next Premier League game on Saturday evening.
