Dimitar Berbatov believes Jose Mourinho is right to lay down a solid foundation at Manchester United before reintroducing a stylish brand of football.

The Red Devils boss has been criticised in recent weeks after Manchester United deployed a negative approach to their goalless draw with bitter rivals Liverpool at Anfield.

Manchester United lost 2-1 to promoted side Huddersfield Town at John Smith’s Stadium as the Red Devils appeared to suffer a hangover from their stalemate on Merseyside.

The 20-time English champions adopted conservative tactics for last weekend’s 1-0 win against title rivals Tottenham Hotspur after Anthony Martial scored a late winner.

Mourinho’s men failed to thrill the Old Trafford crown again on Tuesday night despite a 2-0 win against Portuguese side Benfica to leave the Red Devils on the brink of the knockout stage.

Former Manchester United striker Berbatov insists Mourinho is going about restoring the Red Devils to their former glory in the right way.

Berbatov told BT Sport: “The question is what do the fans want? To win the league, the Champions League or a cup playing badly from time to time but winning 1-0, or playing beautiful football but not winning?

“I prefer to see them win something then you can start to build something to play more beautiful like the fans want.”

Manchester United will undergo another test of their title credentials this weekend when the Red Devils make the trip to defending Premier League champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The Red Devils suffered a 4-0 loss to Mourinho’s former club Chelsea in their meeting at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League last term.
