Jamie Carragher has suggested that Jose Mourinho is right to deploy conservative tactics in their biggest games following Manchester United’s 1-0 loss to Chelsea last weekend.

The Red Devils boss was criticised for his perceived negative approach to Manchester United’s clash at Anfield at the start of October after the Red Devils showed little attacking adventure in a goalless draw with bitter rivals Liverpool.

Manchester United welcomed Tottenham Hotspur to Old Trafford two weeks later following a surprise 2-1 loss to promoted side Huddersfield Town and the Red Devils struggled to find their attacking rhythm as summer signing Romelu Lukaku was quiet again.

Substitute Anthony Martial scored an 81st-minute goal to seal a 1-0 win against the north London club but the Manchester United boss was criticised once again.

The Red Devils started their Premier League clash against defending champions Chelsea eight points adrift of leaders Manchester City after the Citizens were 3-1 winners against Arsenal in Sunday’s early game.

Mourinho allowed his Manchester United side to play with more freedom but the Red Devils struggled to penetrate Chelsea’s defence before Alvaro Morata netted a second-half winner to seal a 1-0 win.

Former Liverpool defender Carragher has appeared to back Mourinho’s defensive tactics against Manchester United’s title rivals.

“If Man United play an open game, are they good enough? Should Mourinho play a defensive game?” Carragher told Sky Sports. “When they do, they get points.”
