Jose Mourinho might have to discard his pragmatic tactics and adopt an attacking approach when Manchester United host Manchester City on 10 December, Martin Keown says.

The Red Devils have lost ground on their derby rivals in the title race after Manchester United secured four points from their last four Premier League games.

The 20-time English champions settled for a point in a goalless draw with Liverpool at Anfield before a 2-1 loss to promoted side Huddersfield Town.

Manchester United edged to a close-fought 1-0 win against Tottenham at Old Trafford to remain within five points of current leaders Manchester City.

The Red Devils lost 1-0 to defending Premier League champions Chelsea to slip nine points adrift of Pep Guardiola’s side after 11 games.

Manchester United will have the chance to reduce the deficit when the Citizens make the short trip to Old Trafford on 10 December.

And former Arsenal defender Keown warned Mourinho that he may have to adopt an unfamiliar attacking approach to what is already a must-win Premier League game.

“We have a Manchester derby on the horizon at Old Trafford at the start of December,” Keown told the Daily Mail.

“By then, Jose Mourinho may feel he has to go for it. A draw will not be good enough.

“It has the potential to be a rip-roaring game… and it will be fascinating to see if Mourinho changes his tactics to win this big game.”

Manchester United haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013 when Sir Alex Ferguson got his hands on his 13th and final top-flight crown.

The Red Devils finished in sixth place in the table last term.
