Juan Mata highlights Man United’s ‘extraordinary record’
The Manchester United midfielder reflects on their 100 per cent start to their Champions League
Juan Mata has talked up Manchester United’s “extraordinary” start to their Champions League campaign.
The Red Devils were 2-0 winners against Portuguese side Benfica in their most-recent European fixture to help secure top spot in Group A with two games to go.
Manchester United have eased to comfortable victories over Swiss outfit Basel and Russian outfit Spartak Moscow before two close-fought wins against Benfica.
The Red Devils need one more points from their last two Champions League fixtures to book their place in the last-16 draw.
Manchester United lost 1-0 to defending champions Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday evening to leave the Red Devils eight points adrift of leaders Manchester City.
And Mata was keen to highlight Manchester United’s brilliant start to their Champions League campaign given a disappointing string of results in the Premier League.
“I think that we shouldn’t forget our victory against Benfica at Old Trafford on Tuesday that took us really close to the next stage of the Champions League,” Mata wrote on his personal blog.
“Four wins out of four games are an extraordinary record; we must give value to that, and yet remain vigilant. We still need at least one more point, and our goal, of course, is to finish on top of the group.”
The Red Devils are looking to win the competition for the first time since 2008 when Sir Alex Ferguson’s men beat bitter rivals Chelsea on penalties in Moscow.
Mata was part of the Chelsea squad that won the Champions League in 2012 when the west London side beat Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich on penalties at the Allianz Arena.
Manchester United are in second place in the Premier League table.
