Jose Mourinho told Man United summer signing is missing Paul Pogba
Ex-Irish defender Kenny Cunningham believes Man United striker Romelu Lukaku is missing Paul Pogba
Romelu Lukaku’s downturn in form is the result of Paul Pogba’s absence from the Manchester United team, according to Kenny Cunningham.
Lukaku moved to Manchester United in a £75m deal in the summer transfer window despite the option of returning to Premier League champions Chelsea.
The 24-year-old hit the ground running with a return of seven goals in his opening seven Premier League games to silence his critics after his big-money switch.
However, Lukaku hasn’t found the net since a 4-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on 29 September.
Pogba made a brilliant start to the season with two goals and two assists in his opening four Premier League games but the Manchester United midfielder is sidelined with a knee problem.
Lukaku and Manchester United have struggled to produce their exciting performances in the absence of the club-record signing.
Former Wimbledon defender Cunningham believes Lukaku and Manchester United’s struggles are simply down to Pogba’s absence.
“All the issues we’re talking about come down to two words: Paul Pogba,” Cunningham told Newstalk’s Off The Ball podcast.
“Lukaku being out of sorts and not getting the service he needs. Man United lacking creativity and dynamism. That’s exactly what Pogba brings to that team. The ability to get on the ball. He plays through the lines. He can impact the game further up the pitch.”
Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last season but won the League Cup and the Europa League.
The Red Devils signed Nemanja Matic and Victor Lindelof as well as Lukaku in the summer transfer window.
