Rio Ferdinand: Paul Pogba can be Man United’s catalyst
The Man United legend believes Paul Pogba can help to improve the Red Devils' creativity
Rio Ferdinand is confident Paul Pogba can be Manchester United’s catalyst.
The Red Devils restored Pogba to their starting XI on Saturday evening as Jose Mourinho’s men welcomed Newcastle United to Old Trafford.
Pogba made his return following a two-month spell on the sidelines following a hamstring problem during Manchester United’s 3-0 win against Basel in their Champions League opener.
The 20-time English title winners were looking to return to winning ways following a 1-0 loss to defending Premier League champions Chelsea in their last game before the international break.
Pogba teed up Anthony Martial to halve the deficit following Dwight Gayle’s opener before the club-record signing scored Manchester United’s third goal in a 4-1 win.
The France international made a brilliant start to the 2017-18 campaign following a return of two goals and two assists in their opening five Premier League fixtures.
Former Manchester United defender Ferdinand believes Pogba will help to get the Red Devils’ season back on track.
“Pogba is the man, he is there to create and unlock defences,” Ferdinand told BT Sport. “He’s the locksmith, give him the ball.
“When he has been out, I didn’t see anyone else with the personality to come in and do that. Henrikh Mkhitaryan has been here to do that, and hasn’t done it.
“Pogba is the guy who can be the catalyst for this Man United team to come on again and start pushing.”
Pogba moved to Manchester United in a club-record £89m deal from Serie A giants Juventus in the 2016 summer transfer window.
The Red Devils finished in sixth spot in the Premier League last term but Mourinho’s side won the League Cup and the Europa League.
