Jose Mourinho told 25-year-old Man United star can ‘destroy opponents’
The Spurs legend talks up Paul Pogba's ability to unlock opposition defences for Manchester United
Paul Pogba is capable of destroying Manchester United’s opponents but needs to do it more often, Garth Crooks says.
The France international made his return to the Manchester United team following a two-month lay-off with a knee problem.
Pogba teed up Anthony Martial to cancel out Dwight Gayle’s opener at Old Trafford before the Manchester United midfielder netted his team’s third goal in a 4-1 win against Newcastle.
The 25-year-old has now scored three times and has created three goals for his Manchester United team-mates in five top-flight appearances in the current campaign.
The club-record signing’s absence affected Manchester United’s form in the Premier League following a disappointing return of four points from four games before Newcastle’s visit.
Former Spurs forward talked up Pogba’s influence on the Red Devils team but challenged the France international to be more consistent against their biggest Premier League rivals.
“There is no doubt that Paul Pogba’s return to the Manchester United line-up was as empathic against Newcastle as it was stylish, and so it should be,” Crooks told BBC Sport.
“Newcastle simply do not have the resources to compete with Manchester United. But you can only beat what is in front of you and Pobga tormented Newcastle throughout.
“I would like to see the Frenchman have this sort of performance against the top teams, but there is no doubt that, given time and room, Pogba can destroy the opposition.”
Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last term as Pogba scored five goals and made four assists in his first campaign back at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils won the Europa League and the League Cup in Mourinho’s first season back at Old Trafford.
The 20-time English champions signed three players in the summer transfer window.
