Ex-midfielder: Man United star Paul Pogba lacks substance
Former Man United midfielder Johnny Giles says Paul Pogba lacks substance
Johnny Giles has accused Manchester United record signing Paul Pogba as lacking substance.
The Red Devils signed the France international in a then world-record £89m deal from Serie A giants Juventus in the 2016 summer transfer window to bolster Mourinho’s midfield options.
Pogba scored five goals and made four assists in a difficult first season at Old Trafford as he failed to live up to his big-name reputation despite helping Manchester United to win the Europa League and the League Cup.
The 25-year-old made a brilliant start to the current campaign with two goals and two assists in four games before the Manchester United midfielder succumbed to a hamstring problem.
The France international returned to the Manchester United team for their 4-1 win against promoted side Newcastle United and contributed a goal and an assist.
The signs are encouraging that Pogba won’t take long to find his top form despite his stop-start 2017-18 campaign so far.
However, former Leeds and Man United midfielder Giles remains unconvinced that Pogba is the real deal.
“There is a lack of substance to Pogba. He can do spectacular things at times,” Giles told Newstalk.
“He is a showman. I don’t care about the dancing, the colour of his hair or the goal celebrations. I want to see what he can do to affect a game. Maybe that is old fashioned.”
Manchester United are in second place in the Premier League table and eight points behind current leaders Manchester City.
The Red Devils will welcome promoted side Brighton to Old Trafford this weekend.
