Man United signing more influential than Paul Pogba, claims ex-midfielder
Nemanja Matic is more influential than Paul Pogba at Man United, claims Johnny Giles
Nemanja Matic has more influence on the Manchester United team than Paul Pogba, according to Johnny Giles.
The Red Devils signed Matic in a surprise £40m deal from defending Premier League champions Chelsea back in August despite the Serbia international’s continued importance to Antonio Conte’s team.
Matic has wasted no time reinforcing Manchester United’s midfield and giving France international Pogba the freedom to roam forward and pick holes in opposition defences.
The 29-year-old defensive midfielder helped Manchester United to remain unbeaten in their opening seven Premier League games before a sticky run of form saw the Red Devils drop eight points adrift of leaders Manchester City.
Pogba made his first appearance in two months in a 4-1 win against Newcastle United last weekend and contributed a goal and an assist at Old Trafford.
The former world record signing’s influence on the Manchester United team has been widely hailed over the past week following his return from injury.
However, ex-Manchester United midfielder Giles has claimed that Matic is more important to Jose Mourinho’s team than Pogba.
“I never thought Pogba was a complete midfield player,” Giles told Newstalk.
“Of course he is useful. But I don’t see him as the influence as lot a people do. Matic is far more influential. He won’t look as spectacular but for getting the job done in a professional manner, he is far more influential.”
Manchester United signed Pogba in an £89m deal from Serie A giants Juventus in the 2016 summer transfer window as he became the fourth addition under Mourinho.
