The former Irish defender wants to see Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba match Kevin De Bruyne's performance level
Kevin Cunningham has challenged Manchester United record signing Paul Pogba to push Kevin De Bruyne and Manchester City in the the title race.
The France international made a brilliant start to the season following a return of two goals and two assists in his opening four Premier League games.
However, Pogba suffered a serious hamstring problem in a 3-0 win against Swiss side Basel un the Champions League back in September to keep him sidelined for two months.
Manchester United collected four points from four Premier League games before Pogba returned to Jose Mourinho’s team on Saturday evening.
The 25-year-old created Anthony Martial’s equaliser before he netted Manchester United’s third goal to secure a 4-1 win over Newcastle United.
De Bruyne has scored four goals and has made nine assists in 17 appearances in the Premier League and the Champions League to help Manchester City top the table in both competitions.
The Belgian midfielder scored their winner in a 1-0 victory over defending Premier League champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last month.
Former Republic of Ireland defender Cunningham challenged Pogba to rival De Bruyne’s current supremacy in the Premier League.
“He is going to be the driving force of the team,” Cunningham told Newstalk.
“Pogba and De Bruyne will drive both of these teams over the next three or four seasons.”
Manchester United were 1-0 winners against Brighton on Saturday evening.
