Steven Gerrard sends backing to Man United signing: He’s back firing
The Liverpool legend defends Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku
Steven Gerrard believes Manchester United summer signing Romelu Lukaku is back to his best after ending his goal drought.
The Red Devils signed Lukaku in a £75m deal from Everton in the summer transfer window after seeing off competition from Premier League champions Chelsea.
The 24-year-old striker scored 10 times in nine games in the Champions League and the Premier League to make a brilliant start to his Old Trafford career.
Lukaku’s prolific run came to an abrupt end when he failed to score in a goalless draw with bitter rivals Liverpool at Anfield.
The summer signing didn’t get on the score sheet in a 1-0 win against title rivals Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford or a 1-0 loss to defending champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
However, Lukaku ended a six-game goal drought with Manchester United’s fourth goal in a 4-1 win over Newcastle United at Old Trafford last weekend.
Former Liverpool captain Gerrard backed Lukaku to go on a goal-scoring run following his strike against Newcastle.
“We’re always going to have that debate on Lukaku – can he deliver on the big stage, further down into this competition [the Champions League]?” Gerrard told BT Sport.
“He’s made a terrific start to his Manchester United career. He had a bit of a goal drought but now it seems like he’s firing on all cylinders. Manchester United are a different animal when he’s scoring goals and finishing chances off.”
Manchester United will welcome Chris Hughton’s Brighton side in their next Premier League at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Devils haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013 under Sir Alex Ferguson.
