Dimitar Berbatov has defended Manchester United summer signing Romelu Lukaku after the striker failed to get on a score sheet in a 1-0 win against Benfica on Tuesday night.

The Belgium international moved to the Red Devils in a £75m deal from Premier League rivals Everton in the summer transfer window to bolster their attacking options.

Lukaku scored seven times in seven games in the Premier League to make a brilliant start to life at Old Trafford, while the forward netted three goals in two Champions League outings.

The Manchester United striker has failed to score in their last four games in all competitions to raise serious questions about the summer signing.

Lukaku was denied the chance to score from the spot on Tuesday night after Jose Mourinho opted to give the spot-kick responsibility to Daley Blind.

The Dutch defender dispatched his effort to help Manchester United to ease to a 2-0 victory over Portuguese side Benfica in the Champions League.

Former Manchester United striker Berbatov leaped to the defence of Lukaku amid growing criticism of the Belgium international.

“Why is everyone point that out [his drought]? He is part of a team,” Berbatov told BT Sport.

“It is not an individual sport. You play for the team, not yourself. He didn’t score but he had a decent game.”

Manchester United haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013 when Sir Alex Ferguson was still in charge of the Red Devils.
