Jamie Carragher: Why Romelu Lukaku’s latest Man United goal is so important
The Liverpool legend believes Romelu Lukaku's goal in Man United's 4-1 win over Newcastle was important given Zlatan Ibrahimovic's return from injury
Jamie Carragher believes Romelu Lukaku’s goal in Manchester United’s 4-1 win against Newcastle on Saturday was vital for his confidence with Zlatan Ibrahimovic putting pressure on the summer signing.
The Red Devils signed the Belgium international in a £75m deal from Premier League rivals Everton in the summer after seeing off competition from defending champions Chelsea.
The Manchester United striker scored seven times in seven Premier League games to make an excellent start to the top-flight campaign at his new club.
Lukaku scored three times in two Champions League games to effortlessly make the step up to Europe’s premier club competition despite his relative inexperience.
The 24-year-old failed to score in Manchester United’s next six games ahead of the return of Ibrahimovic from a serious knee problem.
The veteran striker, 36, netted 28 times in all competitions in the 2016-17 season to help Manchester United win the Europa League and the League Cup following a free transfer from Paris Saint-German last summer.
However, Lukaku managed to end his goal drought to help Manchester United ease to a 4-1 win against the Magpies and make a point to the club’s manager, fans and Ibrahimovic.
Former Liverpool defender Carragher explained why Lukaku’s goal was so important for the summer signing.
“I think that’s the most important goal in that 4-1 victory,” Carragher told Monday Night Football on Sky Sports.
“Talking about Zlatan and the impact that might have on Manchester United, everyone says it is fantastic to have him back, and it is, to have a player of that quality. You watch him when he comes on, I think this is hilarious.
“I don’t know if Jose has told him to do this, but he comes on and tells Lukaku to go on the right wing, and he does it.
“I just think going forward, the confidence the goal will give him, he hasn’t scored for a while, and the big man is back.”
Manchester United will take on Swiss side Basel in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
