Jose Mourinho sends message to Man United fans about Romelu Lukaku record
The Manchester United manager sends a message to Belgium's record goal-scorer Romelu Lukaku
Jose Mourinho hailed “fantastic” Romelu Lukaku after the Manchester United striker became Belgium’s record goal-scorer during the international break.
Manchester United signed the 24-year-old in a £75m deal from Premier League rivals Everton in the January transfer window after seeing off competition from title holders Chelsea.
The Red Devils striker scored seven times in his opening seven Premier League games at Old Trafford after Lukaku scored on his debut in a 4-0 victory over West Ham United.
The Manchester United forward netted three goals in two Champions League games too to make an effortless transition to the Red Devils side following his summer move.
Lukaku failed to score in his last six games before the international break, though, to raise concerns about his confidence, before he netted in the 4-1 win over Newcastle on Saturday.
But the Manchester United striker was handed a morale boost when his winner in a 1-0 victory over Japan took him to 34 international goals – a Belgium record.
And Mourinho lavished praise on Belgium’s all-time record goal-scorer following his brilliant feat.
“For Romelu to be so young, beating the record, is fantastic. Romelu is very young and I think he has 10 more years to play for his country, so I can imagine [his total] number of goals [for Belgium] will be amazing,” Mourinho told his media conference on Friday.
Manchester United signed Lukaku after a sixth-place finish in the Premier League last season.
The Red Devils won the Europa League and the League Cup under Mourinho last term thanks in part to Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s goals.
