Rio Ferdinand: Man United signing still working out role in Jose Mourinho’s team
Man United legend Rio Ferdinand believes Victor Lindelof is still finding his feet at Old Trafford
Rio Ferdinand believes Victor Lindelof is still working out his role in the Manchester United team.
The Sweden international moved to the Red Devils in a £30m deal from Portuguese outfit Benfica in the summer transfer window to reinforce Jose Mourinho’s defence.
Lindelof made a number of mistakes in pre-season to perhaps influence Mourinho’s decision to start Eric Bailly and Phil Jones as his first-choice Manchester United centre-half partnership.
The Swedish defender was initially limited to appearances in the Champions League and he made a high-profile mistake in a 4-1 win over Newcastle United in his first Premier League start earlier this month.
Mourinho kept faith with Lindelof for Manchester United’s 1-0 win against Brighton Hove and Albion last weekend before he helped the Red Devils to win 4-2 at Watford on Tuesday night.
Some Manchester United fans questioned the recruitment of the 22-year-old defender following his sloppy start but Lindelof has started to silence his detractors in recent weeks.
In any case, the summer signing appears to have the back of Mourinho following three successive starts in the Premier League ahead of Saturday evening’s trip to Arsenal.
Former Manchester United defender Ferdinand claimed that Lindelof is stll finding his feet at Old Trafford following his summer move.
“I still think he’s working out what he’s about in this Man United team and where he is and where his position lies and getting some confidence,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.
“I still don’t think he’s had two games back-to-back where he can say he’s had decent games to build confidence. And he’s playing against a team that are lively in attacking areas. They will give him a test and if he comes through this, this will give him a bit of confidence I’m sure.”
