Rio Ferdinand: How Zlatan Ibrahimovic can improve Man United
Man United legend Rio Ferdinand opens up about what qualities Zlatan Ibrahimovic will bring to Jose Mourinho's team
Zlatan Ibrahimovic will bring a mental toughness to the Manchester United team following his return from injury, according to Rio Ferdinand.
The former Sweden international made his first appearance in the Manchester United team since suffering a serious knee problem against Anderlecht in the Europa League back in April.
Ibrahimovic scored 28 times in all competitions during his first season at Old Trafford after Manchester United signed the veteran striker on a free transfer from French club Paris Saint-Germain.
Manchester United won the League Cup thanks to Ibrahimovic’s late winner in a 3-2 victory over Southampton at Wembley.
The 36-year-old played a vital role in helping Manchester United to lift the Europa League before his injury problem.
Former Manchester United defender Ferdinand believes Ibrahimovic will add some much-needed mental toughness to Jose Mourinho’s team.
“What he brings, even more than ability at times, is the personality and mentality,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.
“He’s come back from a huge injury. The mental strength that he possesses to be a winner and to stay at the top for a sustained period of time… you have to be strong. He’s vital.”
Ibrahimovic will have to rival Manchester United summer signing Romelu Lukaku for a starting spot in Mourinho’s team.
The Red Devils signed Lukaku in a £75m deal from Everton in the summer transfer window.
