Romelu Lukaku is backing Zlatan Ibrahimovic to help fire Manchester United to a Premier League title challenge when he returns from injury.

The Swedish striker has been out of action with a serious knee injury in recent months and he’s yet to make a single appearance for the Red Devils as he continues his recovery from injury.

It is understood that Ibrahimovic is on course to make his return to action in the new year, as he bids to help the Red Devils catch Manchester City in the race for the title.

The Citizens are currently leading the way at the top of the Premier League table and are eight points clear of second-placed Manchester United after 11 games of the new campaign.

And Belgian striker Lukaku, who signed for Manchester United from Everton in the summer transfer window, is tipping Ibrahimovic to have a big impact when he returns for the Red Devils.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Lukaku said: “It motivates me really, because he’s another good player to add to the squad.

“When you face a team like us it’s difficult for opponents. Ibrahimovic coming back will help us chase Manchester City.”

Manchester United return to Premier League action at the weekend when they take on Newcastle United at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils head into that game on the back of their disappointing 1-0 loss to Chelsea in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge before the international break.
