Paul Merson: Romelu Lukaku lucky Man United star isn’t available
The Arsenal legend says Romelu Lukaku wouldn't be "untouchable" if Zlatan Ibrahimovic was available for Manchester United
Paul Merson has suggested Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku is fortunate Zltan Ibrahimovic isn’t available for selection.
The Belgian star became the second most-expensive signing in Manchester United’s history in the summer when the Red Devils completed a £75m deal to sign Lukaku from Everton.
The 24-year-old wasted no time leaving his mark with seven goals in seven games but the centre-forward has established himself as a flat-track bully given the calibre of Manchester United’s opponents.
Indeed, Lukaku fired a blank when he came up against a top-six team for the first time as Liverpool managed to tame the free-scoring Manchester United striker in a goalless draw at Anfield.
The former Anderlecht forward failed to get on the score sheet in a 1-0 win against title contenders Tottenham Hotspur last week in front of an increasingly frustrated Old Trafford crowd.
Lukaku has failed to score in his last five games but his manager Jose Mourinho has described the summer signing as “untouchable” in the Manchester United team.
Of course, Ibrahimovic is still working on his rehabilitation from a knee problem after he re-signed with the Red Devils in the summer following a return of 28 goals last term.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson suggested the Manchester United fans would be clamouring for Ibrahimovic’s inclusion ahead of Lukaku if the veteran striker was fit.
“If Ibrahimovic was there, he wouldn’t be untouchable,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“If Ibrahimovic was there, it would be very interesting. The crowd would be roaring for Ibrahimovic. It would put pressure on Mourinho. Lukaku would go into his shell.”
