Barcelona to fight to keep hold of Man United transfer target – report
Barcelona want to offer Samuel Umtiti a new contract to fend off interest from the likes of Man United, say reports
Barcelona are planning to offer Samuel Umtiti a new contract to fend off interest from Manchester United, according to reports in Spain.
Spanish newspaper Marca, as quoted by the Sun, is reporting that that the La Liga giants are aiming to offer Umtiti a new deal to bump up his release clause above the current price of £53m.
Reports last week suggested that Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has identified Umtiti as a potential transfer target for the Red Devils as he looks to shore up his defensive options at Old Trafford.
Should Manchester United make a move to sign the 23-year-old Umtiti in January, he would become the most expensive defender in history for £53m.
However, the report in Marca is claiming that Barcelona are wary of losing Umtiti should his release clause be met in January and they are therefore keen to offer him a new contract.
There is bound to be plenty of speculation linking Manchester United with a host of players as the January transfer window draws ever nearer.
The Red Devils signed three players in the summer transfer window as they completed deals for Nemanja Matic, Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku.
Manchester United return to Premier League action next weekend when they host Newcastle at Old Trafford on Saturday.
